This blog explores some of my professional and personal journey in Digital Literacy. (Some of these entries are part of graduate work in the Writing and Critical Literacy Certificate at the University of Minnesota.) I look forward to hearing your stories.

Friends Forever - An Amateur Hour(s) Journey in Voice Thread
The creative side of Voice Thread is invigorating but what is in my mind that I want to do and what I can figure out to do are two different things. Creating the story line with pictures and deciding what to mix with music, comments and text titles was engaging in a way text only isn’t. The pictures and story FF (Forever Friends) influenced each other. Choosing pictures fit the theme and then what pictures were chosen drove the text. Loading pictures was easy, navigating the tutorials and changing settings was also. Challenges with recording and uploading were met with stubborn tenacity. After many detours, an amateur first Voice Thread has evolved. The preplanning and having a clearer picture in the future will help. This text changed several times until I landed on text messages for the titles. Now I hope my friends will accept the invitation and join me in creating a better FF (Friends Forever) story.
In my teaching I want to engage students in more collaborative learning and the resources from our book and Dr. Beach for Digital Storytelling. This chapter could be an entire course.
Quote of the week from the University of Houston The Education Uses of Digital Storytelling:
" British photographer, educator and digital storyteller, Daniel Meadows defines digital stories as "short, personal multimedia tales told from the heart." The beauty of this form of digital expression, he maintains is that these stories can be created by people everywhere, on any subject, and shared electronically all over the world." ." Be sure to check out Daniel's work. I love it when he asks of his documentary and digital work, "Predator or Collaborator? " Take a look; it's 1:13 into the Bus.

Well, I just posted a comment on your blog and it is not there. It is very strange.
ReplyDeleteWhat I was trying to say is this.
Toy Story is one of my favorite movies - partly because of the Friend song. I really do love the lyrics and the music and it fits so well with the movie. You did a beautiful job mixing the song with your words. What a nice tribute to your friendship.
Also, please keep linking things on your blog - I love reading it and following your links.
Thanks,
Natasha
Mary,
ReplyDeleteI love your voice thread. So cute! It reminds me of my girlfriends that I have had since gradeschool and I know I will have forever! The music that you added really tells the tale of your photos.
Good job. Very meaningful!
Kristin
Hi Mary, I'm browsing for Voice Threads today but yours said I needed your permission to view it. Can I please?
ReplyDeleteI had a difficult time accessing your VoiceThread, Mary. After reading your description of it, I was hoping to view it too.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary,
ReplyDeleteI went to Daniel Meadow's website and watched some of his digital story telling. I think I have a better handle on what exactly it is now that I have seen his. He has some great ones. Thanks for sharing.
Mary, I agree, that digital storytelling could be a class all its own. As a mode of expression, it is such a rich genre. I'd love to be a part of that class be it as a student or teacher.
